Riverside Avondale Night Trolley Neighborhood Guide: Out of Town Visitors

Posted by Donny Mak on Wednesday, March 30th, 2016 at 1:00am.

The Riverside Avondale Night Trolley is a fantastic way to show off the neighborhood to your out of town guests. Running the first Friday and Saturday of the month from 6 p.m. - 2 a.m., the Night Trolley is a cost effective and safe way to have a night out on the town.

Start your evening by catching the trolley to Intuition Ale Works. This local favorite brewery has been around since 2010, and specializes in small-batch handcrafted ales. The taproom is intimate, with photos from owner Ben Davis’ family farm adorning the walls, and provides an enjoyable space for conversation. Order a couple of beer flights so your guests can sample the craftsmanship of this Jacksonville brewery. Intuition’s beertenders are well trained in their profession; so don’t hesitate to ask for a recommendation. Intuition is moving to the Downtown area soon, so be sure to enjoy the Riverside location while it is still open!

Next, ride the trolley to the 5 Points area. There is a stop in front of your next destination – Black Sheep. Take your guests up to the rooftop and admire the gorgeous views of the city over dinner. For drinks don’t miss the local favorite, the Dusty Boot, a complex bourbon based cocktail with citrus undertones that personify the historic neighborhood in the urban core. Personal dinner favorites include the Korean Beef Shortribs, a deliciously new Southern entrée, and the skillfully crafted Intuition Jon Boat Mussels.

As the sun sets over the buildings, make your way back to the trolley and head to the Shoppes of Avondale. Walk over to Biscottis to satisfy your sweet tooth. The dessert case in this Jacksonville landmark is the stuff of legends. You’ll find no dessert menu; your waiter will be your personal guide in choosing that special sweet something. From the best-selling Tropical Grand Mariner Cake to the classic German Chocolate Cake, your eyes might be bigger than your stomach so plan on sharing! Ask to sit by the windows for some weekend people watching and to see the area come alive.

Before you hop on the trolley, take a little break from imbibing and walk your guests around the Avondale neighborhood. One reason to appreicate the neighborhood is seeing grand mansions next to adorable classic bungalows. Admire the architectural details and enjoy the time with your friends. Many of the streets have pocket parks at the end, where you can enjoy sweeping river views of the city. Once you’ve had your fill, make your way to a trolley stop and head to Stockton Street.

Jacksonville’s coffee culture is putting the city on the map, and Bold Bean Coffee Roasters paved the way. You’ll find a shop full of people passionate about the coffee they serve, and the process involved. Order a pour over or honey latte and taste what makes this place so special. Should you be craving a beer, check out the chalkboard for what is currently on draft.

If you’re looking to keep the evening going, take the trolley back to 5 Points or head to the King Street District, where you’ll find an array of late night options. Don’t forget that the trolley stops running at 2 a.m., so allow enough time to catch a ride back to your home stop.
